Q: What is a ductless mini-split heat pump?

A ductless heat pump uses an outdoor unit and one or more indoor heads, with no furnace ducts required. It is a good fit for additions, upper floors, older North Bay homes, and cottages. One outdoor unit can serve several rooms.

Q: Do heat pumps also cool the house?

Yes. A heat pump cools in summer the same way a central air conditioner does, by moving heat out of the building. Replacing an aging air conditioner with a heat pump adds winter heating without a second outdoor unit.

Q: What is a hybrid or dual-fuel heat pump system?

A hybrid system pairs a cold-climate heat pump with a gas furnace. Above a set outdoor temperature, the heat pump heats the building. Below that balance point, the furnace takes over. It is the most common upgrade for Enbridge gas customers who want lower bills without giving up backup heat.

Q: What is a cold-climate heat pump?

A cold-climate heat pump is an air-source unit tested to keep heating at low outdoor temperatures, not a standard air conditioner with a mild-weather heat mode. Qualifying models must still deliver useful heat at −15°C and keep operating down to about −25°C. That is the type to specify for a North Bay install.

Q: Do heat pumps work in North Bay winters?

Yes. A cold-climate air-source heat pump is built to heat below freezing and keep running in the −15°C to −25°C range North Bay sees in mid-winter. Output drops in the coldest snaps, which is why many local homes use a hybrid setup: the heat pump handles most of the season and a furnace covers extreme cold.
