A healthy gas furnace flame should be mostly steady and blue. A yellow, flickering, or lifting flame can mean incomplete combustion, dirty burners, or a venting problem and may produce carbon monoxide. Turn the furnace off and call a licensed technician. Install working CO alarms on every floor.
